ARTIST STATEMENT

How do we affect the world with what we buy? Have you ever considered what repercussions you cause when you purchase something at the store? With one line faces and leaves, flowers, and twigs, I have explored the effects of consumerism. My first piece, the blue one-line face with receipts, led me to this subject. The one-line drawing symbolized the long process for clothing, while the receipts on either side represent the people paying for those items. More recently, I used second-hand fabric to make a quilt. My intention was to directly connect thrift store shopping to the effects of consumerism. Thrift shopping is helping to fix the fast fashion trend by giving old clothing a second life.Through this artwork, I have learned that each piece of clothing goes through a process: from plants to thread, to fabric, to people, to the stores.
